Random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) analysis was applied to 40 Malus domestica cultivars by using 16 random primers and produced 139 clear and reproducible bands of which 106 bands were polymorphic. From the UPGMA cluster analysis by using the polymorphic RAPD bands, the 40 apple cultivars were divided into 6 groups at Cosine similarity coefficient 0.68.
Rall´s Janet, Fuji, and the bud mutations of Fuji formed group I, Sekaiichi, EarliBlaze, Delicious and its bud mutations formed group II. Group III formed only with Indo. group IV formed with Gala, Mutsu, Jonagold, and their strains, group V formed with Jonathan, Jonared, Kogetsu and Mollies Delicious, and group VI formed only with Spur Golden Delicious.
